Icicles Combated with Tru-Soft Cellulose in Twinsburg, OH

Challenge

This homeowner located in Twinsburg, OH was dealing with annoying and unsafe icicles and ice dams on their roof. Both icicles and ice dams are winter time problems that occur if there is a lack of attic insulation. Icicles form when melted snow drips down and freezes from the roof. Ice dams form on the edge of the roof, preventing correct water drainage. Both of these issues can cause damage to the home and potentially hurt a person walking below the icicles. The homeowner knew they needed a professional to assess why exactly these were forming. She found that Primary Home Improvements was her local insulation expert and was scheduled with a free in-home estimate!

Bert, the energy consultant, arrived to the free estimate and climbed into the attic to see if that was the source of the ice problem. He found that there was a mix of old, rolled insulation and rotted fiberglass. This combination was not insulating the attic properly. In fact, it was allowing drafts and moisture into the home. Solution

On the day of the project, the attic crew arrived and began working to insulate the attic. They made sure to blow R-49 across the entire attic, including in the knee walls. Knee walls are a common source of air infiltration, so it was important to insulate them. A high R-Value, such as R-49, is important to resisting heat flow between the insulating material. High R-Value is a literal layer of protection between the outside air and the home. Once installers were finished blowing in Tru-Soft, they made sure to do a final walkthrough with the customer and show them the attic. The customer was happily shocked at the difference from the before and after of their attic space. Now, winter cold doesn't stand a chance against their home!
